"Maintaining and strengthening the employee experience is one of the highest priorities for [Chief Executive] Steve [Ballmer], the leadership team, and me."1

- Lisa Brummel, Senior Vice President of Human Resources, Microsoft Corporation, in May 2006.

Best Company to Work For

US-based Microsoft Corporation (Microsoft) was ranked 38th in Fortune's2 list of '100 Best Companies to Work For' published in January 20093. (Refer to Exhibit I for Fortune's List of 'Best Companies to Work For'). The company improved its position from 86th in 2008. The factor that accounted for the improvement in the company's ranking was its continuing with its 'morale budgets' for its employees even during the global economic slowdown. The 'morale budget' was used to fund fun events like team dinners, outings, sports events, etc. Microsoft was also ranked 10th in Fortune's list of "50 Most Admired Companies" published in 2009 and was given the fifth rank in people management.
